Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday announced Faf du Plessis as the new captain for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The former finalists announced the former South Africa captain as Virat Kohli’s successor at the RCB Unbox event in Bengaluru.

Faf du Plessis will spearhead a new era for RCB as he replaces Virat Kohli, who had led the side for almost a decade. Kohli had stepped down from the role after IPL 2021 ended, adding he wanted to take a breather from the responsibilities. The former South African batsman, who spent a decade with the Chennai Super Kings, was bought by RCB for Rs 7 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

RCB, who have not won a title since the start of the IPL, was the last team to announce their captain ahead of the 2022 IPL, which will be a 10-team season. Du Plessis becomes RCB’s seventh captain after Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Kevin Pietersen, Shane Watson, Virat Kohli and Daniel Vettori.

Du Plessis has been one of the most consistent players in IPL so far as the former CSK star has 2935 runs in 100 games in IPL. The South African star was in superb form during his winning run in the IPL 2021 campaign for CSK, scoring 633 runs in 16 games.
