Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday the number of electric vehicles in the country will increase to 3 million in the next two years.

Introducing start-up products being incubated here at the science and technology park, Mr Gadkari said that India has the largest pool of young talent and there is a need to nurture these innovative minds.

“In the electric scooter segment, there are currently about 250 startups that have built really good scooters and they are all heavily booked,” said Mr. Gadkari.

“There are currently 12,000 electric vehicles in the country. By the end of December, the number will rise to 40,000 and reach 3 million in the next two years,” he added.

He said he’s glad the monopoly of big brands in the EV segment is being challenged by smaller ones, as the latter launch equally good products.
