The government said on Wednesday it has formed an advisory committee for Semicon India, which will include senior government officials, established academics and industry and subject matter experts.
The Committee will be chaired by Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw with Minister of State, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) Rajeev Chandrashekhar as Vice-Chair. The secretary, MeitY, will be the convenor.
The union cabinet recently approved the ₹76,000 crore “Semicon India” program to develop the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in the country. A specialized and dedicated India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has been established within Digital India Corporation to drive India’s ecosystem development strategies.
“The newly formed Advisory Committee aims to steer the targets in a structured, efficient and strategic manner and to provide necessary guidance to ISM leaders,” the government said in a statement.
The committee will also provide insights and suggestions on how to develop a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem in India. “The committee’s mission is to make key contributions to building a resilient supply chain, foster investment, funding mechanisms, global engagement, research and innovation, and intellectual property generation for the semiconductor and display ecosystem, and an ecosystem to support startup -ups and MSMEs to enable. ‘ it added.
Other members of the committee are Dr. VK Saraswat, member NITI Aayog; Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government of India; Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs; Secretary, Expenditure Department; Secretary, Ministry of Economy; Secretary, Department of Industry and Domestic Trade Promotion; Deputy NSA, National Security Council Secretariat; Vinod Dham, Founder and former Managing Partner at Indo-US Venture Partners; Ajit Manocha, President SEMI, USA; Neelkanth Mishra, Credit Suisse; Prof. A. Paulraj, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University; Prof. Pradeep Khosla, Chancellor, University of California San Diego; Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, Chennai and Ajai Chowdhry, Co-Founder of HCL.
The committee will meet at least once every three months to make important contributions to the sustainable development of the ecosystem in India, it said, adding that the committee’s term is one year, after which it would be re-formed with the approval of the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.
