According to data compiled by auto dealer association FADA, retail sales of electric vehicles in the country more than tripled in the last fiscal year, with two-wheeler purchases leading the segment.

Total electric vehicle (EV) sales reached 4,29,217 units in 2021-22, a triple increase from 1,34,821 units in fiscal 2020-21, the industry body said.

Total sales of electric vehicles in the 2019-20 fiscal year were 1,68,300 units, it said. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), retail sales of electric passenger cars last fiscal year totaled 17,802, more than triple the 4,984 units in fiscal 21.

Domestic automajor Tata Motors led the segment with sales of 15,198 units and an 85.37% vertical market share. The Mumbai-based company’s retail sales totaled 3,523 units in 2020-21.

MG Motor India ranked second last fiscal year with sales of 2,045 units and a market share of 11.49%.

1,115 units were retail sold in fiscal year 2020-21.

Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India were third and fourth with deliveries of 156 and 128 units respectively, both content with a market share of less than 1%. According to FADA data, M&M and Hyundai had sold 94 and 184 units, respectively, in fiscal 2020-21.

Retail sales of electric two-wheelers stood at 2,31,338 units last fiscal year, a jump of more than five times from 41,046 units in 2020-21, it said. Hero Electric led the segment with sales of 65,303 units, capturing a 28.23% share of the domestic market.

It was followed by Okinawa Autotech, which sold 46,447 units last fiscal year. Ampere Vehicles took third place with 24,648 units sold. Hero MotoCorp-backed Ather Energy was fourth with a registration of 19,971 units in 2021-22.

Bengaluru-based Ola Electric was sixth with sales of 14,371 units, while TVS Motor Company was seventh with registrations of 9,458 units in the past fiscal year.

FADA, which collected data from 1,397 of the 1,605 regional transportation bureaus, said total sales of electric tricycles last fiscal year were 1,77,874 units, doubling from 88,391 units in the previous fiscal year.

Similarly, FADA noted that commercial electric vehicle sales increased to 2,203 units last fiscal year, compared to 400 units in fiscal 21.
