HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ruturaj Gaikwad set up the opener for CSK with a 4-ball duck
  • His opening partner Devon Conway managed just 3 balls out of 8
  • Shreyas Iyer reaped the rewards for giving Umesh Yadav an extra over on the power play

Ruturaj Gaikwad started the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season quite normally as last season’s Orange Cap winners exited with a 4-ball duck in the opening match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Ruturaj did nothing wrong last season as he played a crucial role in helping Chennai Super Kings to their 4th IPL title. The Maharashtra batsman had topped the hit charts with 635 runs in 16 games.

On Saturday, however, Ruturaj looked at sea given the pace and momentum Umesh Yadav generated with the new ball after KKR won the toss and opted to bowl in Mumbai. After playing and missing some deliveries, Ruturaj was caught by slips trying to hit hard on a wide delivery from the elder Indian pacesetter.

Ruturaj also failed to make good use of a free kick while playing, missing the freebie after Umesh exceeded 2022 in the very first delivery of IPL.

Ruturaj’s new partner Devon Conway, who was making his debut for CSK, also failed to cause the scorers much trouble. The left-handed New Zealand batter managed just 3 runs from 8 balls before returning to the pavilion after a soft dismissal when Umesh scored twice for KKR on the power play.

CSK only managed 35 runs and lost 2 wickets on the power play. Shreyas Iyer was spot on as the new captain for KKR as he scored the results after missing an extra over in the first 6 overs for Umesh who was gaining momentum.

Robin Uthappa reached the top six of the 2022 IPL after going at-bat in 3rd place for Chennai on Saturday when they missed Moeen Ali, who was unavailable due to delayed visa issues. Uthappa kept the CSK load going on the power play, hitting 23 runs from 16 balls, including 2 big ones.
