It’s not about how much you’re worth, it’s about how much you can convince someone to pay you. But you should always ask for more, damn it.

Rams star wide receiver Cooper Kupp says he’s not trying to bankrupt the franchise as he’s poised for a contract extension at a moment when his peers are being paid and dictating the market. Stefon Diggs, Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill will all make between $24 million and $30 million a year as a result of their new deals. However, neither of them have matched what Kupp did in 2021, despite the 28-year-old saying he’s “trying not to beat anyone”.

“I don’t think that’s really my approach,” said Kupp. “I definitely think there’s a place you want to be. There’s a place you think is fair. A place for me and for this organization. … I try not to hit anyone. I try not to compare myself to others. Rather, it is about being in a place that is just right for both parties.”

I wonder what his agent thinks of this.

After a season in which Kupp led the NFL in receptions (145), touchdowns (16) and yards (1,947) — a feat only Jerry Rice, Sterling Sharpe and Steve Smith Jr. have managed since the merger — Kupp starred in the postseason with 40 catches for 596 yards and 7 touchdowns when he was named Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP after a season in which he was attempts to become the first wide receiver to ever win MVP.

“Well I think it’s important to be here, to be with the guys and to be with this team.” Kupp about his situation. “The goal at the end of the day is to win a world title. Whatever will get us to a place where we can fight for another world title, will put us in a better position where we can be a better football team, that’s the goal. I think the best thing I can do is be a part of it…”

To date, Spotrac Kupp has earned just over $23 million in his career. But given this production, this should be the amount he will be paid at least per year on his new contract. And not just because he’s proven he’s worth it, but because that’s the new speed for a player of his caliber.

Get the money, coop. The team you’re playing for just spent $5 billion for a stadium. Trust me they can afford to give you a raise.
