The country’s unemployment rate rose to 7.83% in April from 7.6% in March, according to data from the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).
The unemployment rate in urban areas was 9.22%, up from 8.28% in March, data released on Monday showed.
In rural areas, the unemployment rate was 7.18% in April compared to 7.29% in the previous month.
The unemployment rate was highest in Haryana at 34.5%, followed by Rajasthan at 28.8%, Bihar at 21.1% and Jammu and Kashmir at 15.6%, the data showed.
Mahesh Vyas, chief executive of CMIE, told PTI that it is important to note that the activity rate and employment rate also rose in April.
“This is a good development,” said Mr. Vyas.
The employment rate rose to 37.05% from 36.46% in April, he added.
