The rupee depreciated 14 paise to 76.31 against the US dollar at the open on Friday, to 76.31, as a lackluster trend in domestic stock markets and a firmer US dollar weighed on investor sentiment.

However, a drop in international crude prices limited losses, forex traders said.

On the interbank foreign exchange exchange, the rupee opened significantly lower against the US dollar, trading in a narrow bearish bias range. It traded at 76.31 on early deals and is down 14 paise from the last close.

In the previous session, the rupee rose 13 paise to close at 76.17 against the US dollar.

The dollar index, which measures the dollar’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.04% to 100.65.

On the domestic stock market front, the 30-stock Sensex was down 588.97 points, or 1.02%, to 57,418.86, while the broader NSE Nifty was down 175.55 points, or 1.01%, to 17,217.05.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures were down 1.13% to $107.11 a barrel.
