Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the state capital rose by ₹2.50 per kilogram for the second day on April 7, bringing the total increase since March by ₹12.5 per kg. CNG in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi now costs ₹69.11 per kg, compared to ₹66.61 per kg in the national capital and adjacent cities.

Prices had also risen by £2.50 per kg on Wednesday. However, there was no change in Piped Natural (Cooking) Gas (PNG) tariffs. It still costs ₹41.61 per standard cubic meter. CNG prices in Delhi have risen by ₹12.48 per kg since March, when the city’s gas distributors began to factor in high international energy prices.

On Thursday, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) hiked the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Mumbai by £7 per kg to £67 per kg, while Gujarat Gas hiked prices by £6.50 per kg to £76.98 per kg . Prices vary from city to city depending on the collection of local taxes such as VAT.

The increases come as the government more than doubled natural gas prices to $6.1 per million British thermal units from April 1. Natural gas, when compressed, becomes CNG for use as a fuel in cars. The same gas is also piped for cooking and other uses in domestic kitchens and industries.

The increase in CNG prices follows a £10 per liter increase in petrol and diesel prices in 16 days and a £50 per bottle increase in cooking gas LPG prices. A record 137-day hiatus in gasoline and diesel price revisions ended on March 22nd. On the same day, the price for a 14.2 kg LPG bottle in the state capital was increased to ₹949.50. In some places the LPG price has reached £1,000.

According to IGL, CNG now costs ₹71.67 per kg in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad and ₹77.44 per kg in Gurugram, the cities bordering Delhi.
