Steel Minister inaugurates JSPL’s 1.4 tonne rebar mill at Angul Plant to the nation

Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh on Thursday inaugurated to the nation JSPL’s 1.4 MTPA-TMT rebar mill, located at the steel unit here.

The rebar plant is one of the world’s largest rebar manufacturing facilities and the only manufacturer of 50mm wide TMTs in India, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd said. (JSPL) in a statement.

“Union Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh on Thursday inaugurated to the nation one of the world’s largest rebar mills with a capacity of 1.4 MTPA,” JSPL said.

The state-of-the-art 1.4 MTPA (million tons per year) rebar rolling mill is located at JSPL’s 6 MTPA facility in Angul, Odisha.

The Minister also visited JSPL’s 2 MTPA Coal Gasification Plant (CGP) located in the Steel Unit. JSPL is the only company in India using coal gasification technology to make steel at its Angul plant.

The coal gasification plant is equipped with CO2 capture technology. It captures approximately 2,000 tons of CO2 per day, helping to significantly reduce the carbon footprint, it said.

JSPL Chairman Naveen Jindal said: “We are honored that India’s largest TMT rebar mill is dedicated to the nation. In line with our sustainability focus, we have commissioned India’s first CGP-based DRI facility at Angul. We agree on the Government’s climate commitment at COP26 to become a carbon neutral nation by 2070.”

JSPL Managing Director (MD) VR Sharma said JSPL can now produce 50mm TMT rebar at the rebar factory, which is the first of its kind in the country. The TMT rod with a width of 50mm was developed by the company’s R&D team.

JSPL is part of the OP Jindal Group and has a significant presence in the steel, energy and mining sectors with approximately ₹90,000 crore of investments around the world.
