Benchmark indices fell for a second straight day on Monday, with the Sensex slipping 617.26 points after sharp selling in market-main Reliance Industries and negative global signals.

Unabated foreign capital outflows contributed to the weak mood.

The BSE benchmark Sensex fell 617.26 points, or 1.08%, to end at 56,579.89. Over the day, it plunged 840.28 points, or 1.46%, to 56,356.87.

The broader NSE Nifty fell 218 points, or 1.27%, to 16,953.95.

Among Sensex’s 30 stocks, the biggest laggards were Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, NTPC, Reliance Industries, Titan, ITC, Larsen & Toubro, and Sun Pharma.

In contrast, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Nestlé, Maruti Suzuki and Bharti Airtel were the winners.

The Asian markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai settled significantly lower.

Markets in Europe also traded in negative territory for the afternoon session.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent fell 4.44% to $101.92 a barrel.

Overseas institutional investors continued their selling spree, selling ₹2,461.72 crore of shares, according to stock market data on Friday.
