Dwayne Bravo will be stepping up to the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season with an opportunity to break an all-time bowling record set by Lasith Malinga. Bravo is just 3 shy of Malinga’s record tally of 170 wickets in the moneyed league.

While Malinga is set to work as a fast bowling coach with the Rajasthan Royals, Bravo, 38, is going strong after inking a Rs. 4 crore deal with the Chennai Super Kings. Bravo is currently second on the list with 167 wickets. Bravo already holds the record for the leading wicket-taker in all T20 crickets with 571 in 522 games, 120 wickets more than nearest rival Imran Tahir.

The race for Malinga, one of the game’s legends who served beautifully for the Mumbai Indians, heated up last season.

Indian spinners like Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla had opportunities to surpass Malinga’s tally but they didn’t get enough games in IPL 2021 to reach the milestone. Mishra played 4 games for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021, amassing 6 wickets to take his tally to 166 wickets. Mishra was not sold at the IPL 2022 auction.

Chawla played just one game for the Mumbai Indians after being selected for Rs 2 crore and failing to sell at the mega auction earlier this year. It has 157 gates.

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh completes the top five with 150 wickets. After representing KKR last year, the World Cup winner decided to hang up his boots earlier this year.

Dwayne Bravo will play a key role for Chennai Super Kings as the star all-rounder is one of the oldest members of the bowling unit who will be without their most expensive pick at the auction, Deepak Chahar, for at least the first few weeks.

Bravo played just 6 games in CSK’s disastrous IPL 2022 campaign, but the veteran bowler picked up 14 wickets in 11 games in his winning streak last year and earned praise from former captain MS Dhoni for his death bowling performance.
