Markets rebound after two-day slide; Sensex jumps to 777 points

Benchmark indices rallied sharply on Tuesday after falling in the last two sessions, with the Sensex gaining nearly 777 points, helped by buying in index major Reliance Industries and the recovery in global markets.

The 30-part BSE benchmark rose 776.72 points, or 1.37%, to end at 57,356.61. Over the day, it rose 862.35 points, or 1.52%, to 57,442.24.

The broader NSE Nifty gained 246.85 points, or 1.46%, to end at 17,200.80.

Among Sensex’s 30 stocks, the big winners included PowerGrid, Titan, M&M, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, SBI, Bharti Airtel and HUL.

Conversely, Axis Bank, Asian Paints, Maruti and TCS all ended with losses.

Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul settled in the green while Shanghai closed lower.

Markets in Europe were also trading in the green during the afternoon session.

Stocks in the United States ended with gains on Monday.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent fell 0.75% to $101.55 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors continued their selling spree, selling shares for a net 3,302.85 crore on Monday, according to stock market data.
