Markets give up early gains; Sensex falls 276 points

Benchmark indexes pared early gains and declined for a fourth straight day on Wednesday, with the Sensex falling 276.46 points while index majors Infosys and Reliance Industries sold off.

Foreign institutional investors who remained in sell mode and the rise in crude oil prices also weighed on sentiment.

Despite a solid start, the 30-piece BSE Sensex failed to capture the momentum, ending at 54,088.39, down 276.46 points or 0.51%. On the day, it fell 845.55 points, or 1.55%, to 53,519.30.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell 72.95 points, or 0.45%, to settle at 16,167.10.

“Indices showed extreme volatility today ahead of this week’s CPI and IIP data. Market breadth was very weak as several stocks in the broader market took a big hit…” said S. Ranganathan, head of research at LKP Securities.

Among Sensex firms, prominent laggards included Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finserv, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Maruti, PowerGrid, Infosys and ITC.

On the other hand, winners included Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, HDFC, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel.

Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai finished higher, while Seoul settled marginally lower.

Stock markets in Europe were higher in the afternoon.

US stock markets mostly closed higher on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent rose 3.12% to 105.7 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors sold a net 3,960.59 crore of shares on Tuesday, according to stock market data.

“Nifty is down for the fourth straight day while Asian markets are mixed and European markets are ahead of US inflation reports,” said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research, HDFC Securities.
