Markets continue to fall on Day 2; Sensex loses 85 points

Benchmark indices continued their downward trend on Monday, with the Sensex falling 84.88 points, tracking the selling of index majors Infosys and Reliance Industries along with weak global stocks.

The 30-stock BSE benchmark fell 84.88 points, or 0.15 percent, to settle at 56,975.99 after recouping some lost ground during the fag end of trading. Over the course of the day, it fell 648.25 points, or 1.13 percent, to 56,412.62.

The NSE Nifty fell 33.45 points, or 0.20 percent, to close at 17,069.10.

From the Sensex package, the biggest laggards included Titan, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Maruti, Asian Paints, Larsen & Toubro, and SBI.

On the other hand, winners included IndusInd Bank, NTPC, Power Grid, Tata Steel, HDFC and ITC.

Elsewhere in Asia, markets in Seoul and Tokyo fell while Shanghai and Hong Kong were closed for public holidays.

Stock markets in Europe also traded lower in the afternoon session.

Stocks in the US closed significantly lower on Friday.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent fell 2.61 percent to $104.3 a barrel.

Overseas institutional investors sold shares worth Rs 3,648.30 crore net on Friday after becoming net buyers, according to stock market data on Thursday.

“The Fed’s recent radical turnaround has made investors extra cautious ahead of the upcoming Fed meeting, which is fueling high market volatility. The rising dollar index, FII selling spree and elevated commodity prices further weighed on risk sentiment.

“On the other hand, domestic numbers such as the GST survey, auto sales and April manufacturing PMI gave a sense of an improving economic outlook,” said Vinod Nair, research director at Geojit Financial Services.

Stock markets will remain closed for Eid-Ul-Fitr on Tuesday.
