It was only Game 4 of the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) but Shubman Gill’s stunning catch for the Gujarat Titans is already being dubbed ‘Catch of the Tournament’. The opening game in India featured Evin Lewis, who showcased his sporting skills in GT’s opening game against fellow newcomers the Lucknow Super Giants on Monday 28th March at Wankhede Stadium.
Shubman Gill left cricket fans in awe as he ran back from the 30-yard circle to cover ground and make a dive catch to ensure Varun Aaron’s well-managed bouncer was not wasted.

On-air commentators including the legendary Sunil Gavaskar praised Gill’s performance as the opening goal for India made the catch look easy. Gill never took his eyes off the ball from the moment Lewis headed it into the night sky in the 4th over of the game.
A segment of fans were even reminded of Kapil Dev’s legendary catch from the 1983 World Cup final, which saw West Indies great Viv Richards fired when Gill picked up the catch.

Gill’s catch of sacking Evin Lewis increased the pressure on the Lucknow Super Giants as Gujarat Titans pacer Mohammed Shami rocked their top order and captain KL Rahul picked up for a golden duck in the game’s first delivery before Quinton de Kock’s stumps wheel beat.
After Aaron took the wicket from Lewis, Shami struck again and took the wicket from Manish Pandey, faltering Lucknow at the end of the power play at 32/4.
However, Lucknow put up a good fight as Deepak Hooda hit a 55 counterattack and linked a solid 80+ partnership with 22-year-old Ayush Badoni, who shone in his first stint for the new franchise.
Gujarat captain Hardik Pandya finally bowled again, ending months of speculation, but the all-rounder gave away 37 runs in his 4-over spell as Lucknow fought back against the top order collapse.
