“I’ve told the boys to keep their doors open once they’re in their rooms and getting to know each other. I’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner with all the younger guys that I don’t know,” Ponting said.

“When you show love to the younger ones as a coach or as a senior player, you know they will give it back.”

“The guys who have been in the Delhi Capitals camp for a while definitely have a responsibility to lead the youngsters within the team.

“Rishabh’s captain so he’ll do that anyway but guys like Prithvi, Axar and Nortje will also have their roles and responsibilities within the team,” he added.

Ponting was struck by the energy in the group of players as he attended his first training session with the team.

“Right now we really need to focus on what we need to do to prepare for the first game. I had a great first session with the players. There’s an energetic vibe in the team, that’s what we’re always striving for,” said Ponting.
