Delhi Capital head coach Ricky Ponting has set Rishabh Pant’s men team tie targets to build ties ahead of the new 2022 Indian Premier League season. Delhi has brought in plenty of fresh faces following the mega auction and Ponting’s initial focus is on making everyone feel at home in the capitals.
Delhi four players – skipper Rishabh Pant, opener Prithvi Shaw, spin all-rounder Axar Patel and South African Anrich Nortje – ahead of the auction.
Ponting said he wants the likes of Shaw, Nortje and Axar to take responsibility alongside Captain Pant to ensure the youngsters settle into the setup. Ponting said he will also have breakfast, lunch and dinner with youth he doesn’t know.
“I’ve told the boys to keep their doors open once they’re in their rooms and getting to know each other. I’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner with all the younger guys that I don’t know,” Ponting said.
“When you show love to the younger ones as a coach or as a senior player, you know they will give it back.”
“The guys who have been in the Delhi Capitals camp for a while definitely have a responsibility to lead the youngsters within the team.
“Rishabh’s captain so he’ll do that anyway but guys like Prithvi, Axar and Nortje will also have their roles and responsibilities within the team,” he added.
Ponting was struck by the energy in the group of players as he attended his first training session with the team.
“Right now we really need to focus on what we need to do to prepare for the first game. I had a great first session with the players. There’s an energetic vibe in the team, that’s what we’re always striving for,” said Ponting.
Delhi Capitals’ new foreign recruits include David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Seifert and Rovman Powell.
Vicky Ostwal, Chetan Sakaria, Yash Dhull, Sarfaraz Khan and Kamlesh Nagarkoti are the youngsters in the team.
