Royal Challengers Bangalore set an unplanned record on Sunday when they became the first team in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to fail to defend more than 200 players four times. RCB hit new low as the Punjab Kings blasted down a 206-run goal with an over to spare in their opening game of the 2022 season at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

RCB’s era under their new captain Faf du Plessis got off to a disappointing start as familiar bowling troubles returned to haunt them. The South African star’s stunning 88 balls from 57 went wide as RCB failed to collect 2 points despite a mammoth total.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings set a new record for most successful chases, surpassing 200 runs. Sunday’s breathtaking chase marked the fourth time PBKS had done so in IPL history.

PBKS surpassed four-time champion Chennai Super Kings’ record of 3 successful 200+ chases in the IPL.

Meanwhile, RCB also set another undesirable record, conceding the most wides in an IPL match. The 2016 finalists conceded as many as 21 goals in their 4-wicket loss to PBKS on Sunday in Mumbai.

The Punjab Kings put their batting skills on display as RCB bowlers, notably Mohammed Siraj (2/59) and Wanindu Hasarnga, were brought to the cleaners.

Bhunuka Rajapaksa smashed a 43-game win with just 22 balls after Punjab’s new-look openers Mayank Agarwal (24-ball, 32) and Shikhar Dhawan (29-ball, 43) sewed a 71-run streak in just 43 balls.

While Liam Livingstone managed 2 sixes for his 10-ball 19, Odean Smith missed 3 sixes for his 8-ball 25 when the West Indies star made good with the ball on an expensive 4-over spell. Shahrukh Khan remained undefeated and hit the winning runs as Punjab accumulated 2 points
