Delhi Capitals have taken a major blow after Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh suffered a hip flexor injury that all but ruled him out of the upcoming ODI series in Pakistan.

Marsh, bought at the IPL auction for a whopping Rs 6.5 crore, was due to join Delhi Capitals on April 6 after Pakistan’s white-ball streak ended, but his availability now depends on the degree of his injury.

DC only bought seven overseas players in the mega-auction and only fielded two of those against Mumbai due to availability restrictions and injuries to other key players. Marsh and David Warner were originally scheduled to join the Capitals after April 6.

Australia’s ODI captain Aaron Finch said Monday in Lahore that Marsh’s scans were sent for an examination after he sustained the injury during a high-intensity field exercise on Sunday.

“He (Marsh) injured his hip flexor working out, we think. We’ll have to see what that looks like but I don’t think he’ll be available for the series depending on how he’s feeling yesterday,” Finch told reporters.

“He claimed a field exercise was a high-intensity, lateral movement exercise, and he bent down to pick it up with one hand, went to throw and felt a stab.”

On Tuesday, the ODI series begins with three games against Pakistan. After the ODIs, the lonely T20I will be played on April 5th.

Marsh, 30, has been one of Australia’s top white ball players of late. He was a member of Australia’s T20 World Cup team last year and scored an unbeaten 77 points in the final against New Zealand to help Australia clinch their maiden title.

Last year Marsh broke the Australian record for most T20I runs in a calendar year, hitting 627 runs at 36.88.
