Experts believe that electricity demand and consumption will grow robustly in the coming months

Electricity consumption in the country rose 13.6% year-on-year to 132.98 billion units (BU) in April, showing the impact of the early start of summers and the boost in economic activity, according to data from the Department of Energy.

Electricity consumption in April last year was recorded at 117.08 BU, which was higher than 84.55 BU in the same month of 2020.

On the other hand, the peak met demand, which represents the highest supply in one day, remained at an all-time high of 207.11 GW in April this year. Peak power was 182.37 GW in April 2021 and 132.73 GW in April 2020.

Electricity consumption and demand were also impacted in April 2020 by the imposition of lockdown restrictions to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus. Electricity consumption in April 2019 (pre-pandemic period) was 110.11 billion units.

The experts believe that electricity consumption and demand have increased at an unprecedented rate, mainly due to the early start of summer, and have shown that greater economic activity is increasing commercial and industrial electricity needs in the country.

The third wave of the pandemic hit the country in January, forcing many states to impose local restrictions such as night and weekend curfews. They had also taken measures such as banning food in bars and restaurants. These restrictions were gradually relaxed by the federal states.

Experts opined that electricity demand and power consumption would show robust growth in the coming months as states lifted almost all local restrictions after a drop in positivity rate.

According to experts, electricity consumption would increase in the future with increased industrial and commercial activities after the easing of lockdown restrictions and due to the long summer period in the coming months.
