Senior cricketers Virat Kohli and R Ashwin, along with several members of the India Test team, were seen at the IS Bindra PCA International Stadium training for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka which begins on March 4.

Senior members of the team – including Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Hanuma Vihari, KS Bharat, Umesh Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav and Mayank Aggarwal – had arrived in Chandigarh and attended Tuesday’s training session.

Kohli is preparing for his 100th Test and was spotted in the Nets in a rigorous session alongside Ashwin, who is subject to fitness. There are many expectations for the star batsman’s landmark game, but the decision not to have an audience at the PCA Stadium has not gone down well with a segment of cricket fans.

The Indian team will play the first friendly of the series in Mohali from March 4-8 before moving to Bengaluru for the second friendly. PCA Treasurer RP Singla confirmed on Saturday that fans will not be able to watch the first test against Sri Lanka from the legendary stadium in Mohali. Singla said the decision was made in accordance with a guideline from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Rohit Sharma’s first test as captain will also herald a new era for India’s middle class as Shubman Gill and Hanuma Vihari are all poised to replace veterans Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the long term. As Kohli plays his 100th Test at Mohali, the three youngsters will prepare for a long stretch in the places vacated by the two veterans after a decade of making them their own.

India’s team combination: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (Week), Hanuma Vihari, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin (Fitness)/Jayant Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj.
