The center has eased its May 13 wheat export ban to allow export shipments registered in the Customs Agency’s systems and handed over for inspection on or before May 13, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said on Tuesday.

The government also allowed a shipment of wheat to Egypt, which was already loaded at the port of Kandla, after the Egyptian government approved it. A large part of the 61,500 tons of wheat consignment had already been loaded for shipment to Egypt. The government has now allowed the exporter to load the remaining 17,160 tons to allow the entire shipment to depart from Kandla.

The ministry reiterated the intent behind last week’s ban, saying the decision will ensure food security and curb inflation while maintaining India’s reliability as a supplier as it will help other countries facing food shortages. The order also aimed to provide clear direction for the wheat market to discourage wheat stockpiling, the ministry added.

The export restrictions announced last week came within days of the ministry’s announcement that official delegations will travel to several countries to tout Indian wheat exports.

The restrictions do not apply in cases where private trade has previously made commitments through letters of credit, as well as in situations where the Center authorizes other countries to meet their food security needs and at the request of their governments.
