These recommendations are “a step backwards rather than forward” in building a digitally connected India, COAI said in a statement

The industry association COAI on Tuesday expressed its deep disappointment with TRAI’s recommendations on 5G and described the frequency prices proposed by the regulator as “too high”.

Given the government’s recent announcement of telecom sector reforms, these recommendations are “a step backwards rather than forward” in building a digitally connected India, COAI said in a statement.

The Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) is an industry apex organization and its membership includes Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea.

In a statement, COAI said it was disappointed with TRAI recommendations on 5G frequency bands.

The TRAI-recommended pricing for frequencies is too high, it said.

“Throughout the consultation process, the industry had made extensive arguments for a significant reduction in spectrum prices based on global research and benchmarks.

“The industry has recommended a 90% lower price and it is deeply disappointing to only see around 35% to 40% of the recommended price cut,” the association said.
