Apple Inc. has started manufacturing the iPhone 13 in India, the company said Monday, as the US tech giant seeks to reduce its reliance on its Chinese supply chain.

According to a source, the phone will be manufactured at a local plant of Apple’s Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn in the city of Sriperumbudur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Apple has shifted some areas of iPhone production from China to other markets including India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, and plans to assemble iPad tablets there as well.

India and countries like Mexico and Vietnam are becoming increasingly important for contract manufacturers supplying American brands as they seek to diversify production away from China.
