Star batter Virat Kohli is happy and excited to pass the baton to his ‘good friend’ Faf du Plessis after the former South African skipper was named the new Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL). 2022.

“We’ve been in touch for many years now and he’s one of the guys that I’ve gotten to know a little bit more besides cricket,” Kohli said.

RCB announced this on Saturday Faf du Plessis as the new captain when the South African batter became her 7th skipper. It will be the first time Du Plessis leads a team in the Twenty20 competition. Kohli had stepped down from the role after IPL 2021 ended, adding he wanted to take a breather from the responsibilities. The former South African batsman, who spent a decade with the Chennai Super Kings, was bought by RCB for Rs 7 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

“We get along really well so I’m really happy that he’s managing RCB… and playing under him. Partnering with Faf will be exciting for RCB fans too, with (Glenn) Maxwell and the core group we keep,” added Kohli.

“The team looks balanced and quite strong. I can’t wait to get going and catch up with Faf and the rest of the guys. I’m really looking forward to this season. I’m excited.”

Faf du Plessis expressed his delight at being appointed RCB captain, saying: “The opportunity to be captain of a franchise like RCB is huge and a role I was delighted to accept. The work is just beginning as we try to build on the success the team has achieved over the past few years. I would like to thank the RCB management and coaching staff for entrusting me with this role and I will do my best to ensure a successful season this time with the desired result.”

The entire 15th edition of the IPL will be held from March 26th in a biosecure environment in Mumbai and Pune in the western state of Maharashtra. The final is scheduled for May 29th. Two new franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will also enter the competition.
