Indian weightlifters Vikas Thakur and Venkat Rahul Ragala took gold and bronze respectively in the men’s 96kg event at the Singapore Weightlifting International and secured a place at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday. India ended its campaign at the event with eight medals, including six gold, one silver and one bronze.

All of the Indian lifters who competed in the event qualified for the Commonwealth Games, including Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu in her new weight class of 55kg. Thakur, a two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, competed in a severely depleted three-lifter field and lifted 339 kg (151 kg + 188 kg) to climb to the top of the podium.

Ragala, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion in the 85kg category, had the best performance of 328kg (146kg + 188kg) to take third place. Australian Ridge Barredo took the silver medal with a weight of 336 kg (149 kg + 187 kg). Both Thakur and Ragal qualified for CWG in Birmingham later that year.

The Singapore Weightlifting International is a qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The top eight lifters in each weight class of the current tournament will qualify directly for CWG 2022.
