  • Sanju Samson definitely a T20 World Cup contender: Rohit Sharma

India captain Rohit Sharma told the press on the eve of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Lucknow that Suryakumar Yadav’s injury was a major setback for the Indian team as he was in great form in the T20I series against West India.

Notably, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar have been left out of India’s upcoming three-game T20I series against Sri Lanka. Both players picked up injuries on the field during the last T20I against West Indies.

“Deepak suffered a right quadriceps injury while bowling, while Suryakumar suffered a hairline fracture during a field try in the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday. They will now go to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further treatment of injuries,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Suryakumar, who was named Player of the Series in the T20Is, was in the slips when he suffered a hairline fracture in his hand in the second innings after hitting a 31-ball 65 in the first innings.

“A big setback. He was in great form but there are so many people waiting for an opportunity. At the same time, I’m sad for Surya. A crazy injury. You can’t control these things,” Rohit Sharma told presser reporters ahead of the T20I series against Sri Lanka.

“Samson is definitely a candidate for the T20 World Championship”

Rohit also opened up on the return of Sanju Samson for the Sri Lanka series, saying the Kerala wicketkeeper is talented and has the skills to succeed. Rohit further explained that Samson is in the team’s management plans for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year due to his brilliant rearfoot game.

Samson was last seen in action for the Men in Blue in the shortest format of the game during an away series against Sri Lanka in July 2021. Since making his T20I debut in 2015, the 27-year-old has represented India in 10 games. He had accumulated 117 runs with an average of 11.70, with his highest single score being 27.

“Sanju Samson has talent – whenever we’ve seen him bat, he’s produced an innings that people are over the moon about. He has the skills to succeed – his backfoot game is brilliant – he’s definitely an option,” added Sharma added.
