Sugar production is likely to be higher this year

Sugar production in this sugar season (October 2021 to September 2022) is estimated at 333 lakh tons compared to 312 lakh tons in the previous season.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement on Friday that between October 2021 and February 2022 up to 516 mills crushed sugar cane and produced 252.87 lakh-tons of sugar, up from 503 mills producing 234 in the same period last season .83 lakh tons produced.

Production in Maharashtra and Karnataka is higher than previous estimates and the preliminary total production estimate for the current season is 333 lakh tonnes after considering the diversion of 34 lakh tonnes of sugar equivalent to ethanol.

In addition, almost 60 lakh tonnes of sugar have been contracted for export and 42 lakh tonnes shipped so far this season. A further 12 lakh tonnes are likely to be shipped this month and the season is expected to end with a total export of 75 lakh tonnes.

The total domestic consumption in the 2021-2022 sugar season will also be higher than last year at 272 lakh tons.

The season started with a stock of 82 lakh tons and is expected to end with a stock of 68 lakh tons, the federation said.
