Former striker Sergio Aguero has announced that he will be part of Argentina’s backroom team at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Former striker Sergio Aguero announced he will be part of Argentina’s backroom team at this year’s World Cup in Qatar after meeting with Argentine Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia on Monday.

The 33-year-old Aguero announced his retirement from professional football due to a heart condition in December last year, ushering in the curtain on an 18-year career in which he scored more than 400 goals.

The former Manchester City and Barcelona forward went on to explain that the final details of his agreement with the AFA would be decided in the coming weeks, adding that he hopes to be able to take part in the final draw for the World Cup, which is due to take place on January 1st . April.

“We have yet to figure out the role, but I will be with the team at the World Cup,” Aguero told TyC Sports.

“It was a nice chat with Chiqui (Tapia). I want to spend time with the players,” he added.

“I’ll be with the team, I get on really well with them. I want to be around them and try to have fun. I want to find a way to help the national team.” Aguero scored 41 goals in 101 games for Argentina, representing them at three World Cups and helping them win the 2021 Copa America – their first major title in 28 years.

Argentina have already qualified for Qatar unbeaten and are second in the South American qualifying group, four points behind Brazil.
