German football club Schalke 04 has terminated its partnership with Russian energy giant Gazprom GAZP.MM following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Executive Board and Supervisory Board of FC Schalke 04 have agreed to prematurely end the club’s partnership with GAZPROM. The club is currently in discussions with representatives from the current sponsor and more information will be released at a later date.

“Management and the Supervisory Board are in talks with representatives of the current main sponsor, further information will be published promptly,” said Schalke on Twitter on Monday.

The club had already announced on Thursday that it would remove Gazprom’s logo from its jerseys after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “Following recent developments, FC Schalke 04 has decided to remove the logo of main sponsor Gazprom from the club’s jerseys. Instead, it will be replaced by the lettering “Schalke 04”, says the club’s announcement.

Gazprom’s board representative at Schalke, Matthias Warnig, also resigned from his position on the Schalke board after the US government put the 66-year-old former Stasi officer on its sanctions list.

Warnig, who is managing director of Nord Stream AG, the Gazprom group building the gas pipeline between Russia and Germany, has been on the Schalke board since 2019.
