Korean electronics company Samsung announced on Tuesday that it is re-entering the fast-growing laptop market in India with six new products after a long hiatus, targeting a strong double-digit market share in the segment by the end of the current year.

“We currently do not sell PCs in India,” said Sandeep Poswal, general manager and head of New Computing Business. “We have now decided to enter the market on a large scale. We plan to offer a holistic offering to our consumers and will reach all consumer segments with these products, including students and businesses,” he said, adding that the company is targeting a double-digit market share in the laptop segment in the country.

During the week, the company will launch six new products – Galaxy Book2 Pro 360, Book2 Pro, Book2, Book2 360, Galaxy Book Go for students and Galaxy Book2 Business for businesses ranging in price from ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000. Samsung unveiled these laptops, which are part of its global portfolio, at the MWC 2022 event last month.

Mr Poswal added that the laptop market in India is growing rapidly and the industry will double between 2019 and 2022. Samsung said it expects continued growth with strong demand for the ultra-thin and convertible categories. “In 2019, traditional laptops accounted for about 60% of the market… now ultra-thin (laptops 20mm thick or thinner) account for almost 80% of the market. Hence, consumers prefer slimmer and lighter laptops. Convertible bonds are also seeing strong demand,” he said.

The laptops, he said, ran Windows 11 and most were powered by 12th-generation Intel i7 or i5 processors. The notebooks feature ultra-fast charging and can provide 21 hours of battery life on a single charge.

“Furthermore, the products will come with LPDDR5 RAM and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity… They will also come with MS Office… This will also enable seamless connectivity with other Galaxy devices.” Existing Galaxy users can connect their tablets and smartphones and use them as second screens,” he added.
