Punjab Kings on Monday announced Mayank Agarwal as the new captain for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Mayank was one of the two players retained by Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction.

The India Opener was retained at Rs 12 crore after they sacked former captain KL Rahul who will now lead the Lucknow Super Giants in the 10-team season expected to start in the last week of March.

Speaking of his appointment, Punjab Kings head coach Anil Kumble said: “Mayank has been an integral part of the side since 2018 and has been part of the leadership group for two years. The new squad we selected at the recently completed auction has exciting young talent and excellent veteran players. With Mayank at the helm, we want to build a strong foundation for the future. He is hardworking, enthusiastic, a team player with all the qualities required of a leader. I look forward to working with him as captain and believe he will lead this team to a successful season.”

Speaking of his promotion, the India international said: “I’ve been with Punjab Kings since 2018 and I’m very proud to represent this fantastic unit. I am very happy to have the opportunity to lead the team. I accept this responsibility with the utmost sincerity, but at the same time I believe my work would be easier with the talent we have in the Punjab Kings roster this season.

“We have some extremely experienced players in our ranks, along with a lot of talented young players who want to seize the opportunity and capitalize on it. We’ve always gone out hoping for the title and as a team we’ll work towards that goal again, to lift our first IPL trophy. I thank the team management for entrusting me with this new role of leading the team. I’m looking forward to the new season and the new challenges it brings.”
