IPL 2022: I’m not really thinking about captaining PBKS, says Mayank Agarwal

Punjab Kings star Mayank Agarwal said he was willing to give up captaincy responsibilities at Punjab Kings for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) if the opportunity came up but he was not too stressed.

Mayank was one of the two players retained by the Punjab Kings in the run-up IPL 2022 Mega Auction. The India opener was retained at Rs 12 crore after they sacked former captain KL Rahul who will now be Lucknow Super Giants in the 10-team season expected to start in the last week of March.

However, the Punjab Kings are yet to appoint their captain after assembling a firepower-packed squad for the 2022 IPL. Punjab also bought former Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan, who has the experience of leading the IPL.

Head coach Anil Kumble did not announce management’s decision on the captaincy after the auction, claiming they will make an announcement sooner or later. Co-owner Mohit Burman had hinted in an interview that Mayank, who has been with PBKS since it was bought at the 2018 IPL auction for Rs 1 crore, could hand over the reins given his familiarity with the setup.

“Obviously if I’m made captain I’m fully ready for the responsibility, but I will do whatever is asked of me as a player when it’s asked. Whether I’m made captain or not, what responsibility whatever is transmitted, whatever is required of me, everything is done on my part,” Mayank told MensXP.

“I’m not too stressed about it. I don’t really think about it. When I get the opportunity I’m up for it and I look forward to taking responsibility and when I don’t I still try to give everything I have can.” have and take on any role dictated by the franchise.”

PBKS has assembled a strong roster with the likes of Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith and Kagiso Rabada making big deals at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. The former finalists will be eager to get their combination right to make their mark in the new season after disappointing last few years in the league.
