  • Jason Roy was bought by the Gujarat Titans in a mega auction
  • The Gujarat Titans are yet to find a replacement for Roy

England opener Jason Roy has withdrawn from the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), citing the challenge of staying in the tournament bubble for an extended period. Roy’s sudden withdrawal has dealt a serious blow to one of IPL’s new teams, the Gujarat Titans, who had bought the England opener for its base price of INR 2 crore at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.

He had reportedly informed the Ahmedabad-based franchise last week. The Gujarat Titans are yet to name a replacement for the England cricketer. Notably, this isn’t the first time Roy has pulled out of an IPL season after being bought at auction. In 2020 Delhi Capitals had signed Roy for his then base price of INR 1.5 crore but he dropped out due to personal reasons.

Roy in particular has previously represented Gujarat Lions (2017), Delhi Daredevils (2018) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021). He remained unsold at the 2021 auction but was drafted as a replacement for Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. Overall, Roy managed to hit 329 runs in 13 IPL matches with an average of 29.90 and a batting average of 129.01.

Roy was the leading runs scorer for Quetta Gladiators in the recently concluded 2022 Pakistan Super League (PSL), also played within a biosecure bubble. Roy accumulated 303 runs with a 50.50 average and a 170.22 batting average, and hit two fifties and two hundreds.
