IPL 2022: Gujarat Titans team profile

Sport

The Gujarat Titans are one of the two new teams that will be part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The team is owned by CVC Capitals and led by Hardik Pandya. The new team is based in Ahmedabad and had its jersey launch at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium.

Ashish Nehra has been signed as the Gujarat Titans’ head coach, while former South African cricketer and world champion coach Gary Kirsten has been appointed as her mentor. The two support team members were instrumental in building a roster from scratch as they were quite active at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

The Gujarat Titans hired 3 players ahead of the mega auction, Hardik Pandya for Rs 15 crore, Afghan leg spinner Rashid Khan and Indian opener Shubman Gill forming a core group that has a bowler, a batsman and an all-rounder. Hardik was given the responsibility of managing an IPL team for the first time in league history.

Hardik, who passed a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy for IPL 2022, will look to capitalize on the experience of having shared the dressing room with the likes of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli in the past. Hardik has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians’ winning streak in recent years and the all-rounder is hoping to establish a winning culture in the new franchise.

The Gujarat Titans had an average auction where they couldn’t make the most of resources to field a well-rounded roster.

The Gujarat Titans have failed to have established batters in the front line. While Gill is expected to score the majority of goals up front, the Titans have found fresh faces in the likes of Abhinav Manohar and Sai Sudhaarsan. Gurkeerat Mann Singh and David Miller are experienced middle-class names.

STRONG BOWLING GROUP

When it comes to the spin bowling department, the Gujarat Titans, along with Indian off-spinner Jayant Yadav, rely on Rashid Khan. They have a handy leg spin option in Rahul Tewatia along with Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad.

Adding variety in attack is R Sai Kishore, a left-arm spinner from Tamil Nadu heading into IPL 2022 after domestic success.

Vijay Shankar and Captain Hardik are local all-rounders for the team.

Meanwhile, Gujarat have three wicketkeepers in Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, brought in to replace England opener Jason Roy.

The Titans also have a strong fast bowling group featuring the likes of Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson, Alzarri Joseph, Varun Aaron and Dominic Drakes.
