IPL 2022 games: New format and groups explained from schedule matrix

Sport

Keeping track of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 schedule will not be easy! The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday 25th February that the new 10-team season will start on 26th March and the final will be played on 29th May.

The board also confirmed that four venues in Mumbai and Pune will host up to 70 league games, 14 more than IPL 2021 which had just 8 teams. The decision to host the games at a single hub (Mumbai-Pune corridor) was made to avoid air travel and avoid the risk of Covid-19 infection.

Indiatoday.in explains the new IPL 2022 format and the schedule matrix which caused a stir among cricket fans.

IPL 2022: NEW GAME FORMAT EXPLAINED

The 10 teams in IPL 2022, including the new sides Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT), were drawn into 2 groups of 5 teams each.

How were the teams divided into 2 groups?

In contrast to football competitions, the BCCI did not rely on a draw, but divided the 10 teams into groups according to the number of titles won and the number of finals reached.

The teams have been split into two virtual groups, with Mumbai Indians, the most successful team, leading Group A. Chennai Super Kings with 4 titles, Group B

How many games will one team play against another team at IPL 2022?

Since each team is scheduled to play 14 games in the league stage, a team plays twice with the teams in its group and with the team in the same row in the second group. For example, in the table above, MI and CSK are in the same row even though they are in different groups.
