Newly appointed Punjab Kings Mayank Agarwal attended the team’s training session ahead of the upcoming 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Wednesday. Agarwal, who was part of the Test squad for the Sri Lanka series, joined PBKS’ camp on Wednesday and was greeted enthusiastically by the players as they began clapping upon his arrival at the training session.

Agarwal, who will make his debut as full-time captain in the 2022 IPL, captained PBKS last year in the absence of KL Rahul and has been named the team’s full-time captain for the upcoming T20 league season. The India opener was retained at Rs 12 crore after they sacked former captain KL Rahul who will now lead the Lucknow Super Giants in the 10-team season.

Agarwal will lead the quest of the Punjab kings to get their hands on the first trophy they have eluded since the tournament began. The franchise pulled off some smart deals at the 2022 auction to bring in some T20 specialists with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Shikhar Dhawan and Shahrukh Khan in their roster. Mayank Agarwal will lead the Punjab franchise as permanent captain for the first time and it will be a difficult task for the first batsman to live up to expectations. On paper, Punjab looks like a solid T20 site that covered almost all the bases in the recruitment process.

Speaking of his promotion, the India international said: “I’ve been with Punjab Kings since 2018 and I’m very proud to represent this fantastic unit. I am very happy to have the opportunity to lead the team. I accept this responsibility with the utmost sincerity, but at the same time I believe that my job would be easier with the talent we have in the Punjab Kings roster this season.

“We have some extremely experienced players in our ranks, along with a lot of talented young players who want to seize the opportunity and capitalize on it. We’ve always gone out hoping for the title and as a team we’ll work towards that goal again, to lift our first IPL trophy. I thank the team management for entrusting me with this new role of leading the team. I’m looking forward to the new season and the new challenges it brings.”
