India v Sri Lanka: Axar Patel added to squad ahead of 2nd Test, Kuldeep Yadav sacked

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday that left-armed spinner Axar Patel is fit and has been included in the India squad ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka, which is due to start in Bengaluru on March 12. Meanwhile, BCCI fired Chinese bowler Kuldeep Yadav from the Indian Test Squad.

“Akshar has been added to India’s 2nd Test squad. The all-rounder has completed his rehab and has been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team. Kuldeep Yadav has been dismissed from the squad for the second Test,” BCCI released a statement.

Axar Patel’s last international appearance was at home against New Zealand last year. He took 9 wickets in 2 games against Tom Latham’s side before suffering the injury.

Axar, who made his debut in the second Test against England, got off to a great start to his Test career after following a five-wicket move in his debut game with two more in a row in the two innings of the Pink Ball Test in Ahmedabad.

It will be interesting to see if Axar gets a game in Bengaluru as India and Sri Lanka will look to capitalize on the conditions in the pink ball test. With R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja sure to start, India could look to ramp up the pace attack for the 2nd Test.

India defeated Sri Lanka by one innings and 222 runs in the first Test at Mohali as Rohit Sharma began his captaincy with a winning run. India rode Ravindra Jadeja’s 175 and a spin bowling masterclass from the all-rounder and R Ashwin to complete the win in 3 days.

India’s squad for the second test: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Priyank Panchal, Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Shubhman Gill, Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper), KS Bharat, Ravindra Jadeja, Jayant Yadav, R. Ashwin, Saurabh Kumar, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Jasprit Bumrah (Vice Captain), Axar Patel
