Captain Rohit Sharma had backed Sanju Samson ahead of the ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka after the wicketkeeper-batter was recalled by the senior team after a 7-month absence. And it seems the Kerala batter’s performance with the bat in the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka on Saturday in Dharamsala impressed his skipper.

While Shreyas Iyer stole the show with a 44 ball 74 inches India’s breathtaking chase of 184 in just 17.1 oversSanju Samson also made his mark with a Quickfire 39 in just 26 balls. Samson turned the momentum in India’s favor in the 13th heat of the chase, picking apart Sri Lankan pacesetter Lahiru Kumara. Samson hammered 3 sixes – all massive and well timed before coming out in the same over.

Samson took his time to get going but once he found his rhythm, his much-discussed talent was on display as he brought them cleanly to the stands in Dharamsala.

Samson and Iyer added an 84-run streak in just 47 balls as the duo helped India recover from early setbacks when they defeated captain Rohit Sharma (1) and Ishan Kishan (16) on the power play in what appeared to be a tough chase lost.

After Samson’s sending off, Ravindra Jadeja kept India from stuttering as he hit a stunning 18-ball 45 that wasn’t looking to put India across the finish line in just 17.1 overs.

After India’s 11th consecutive win in the format, Rohit praised the middle class and said they have consistently improved, with a special mention of Samson.

“Yes, it was something important because it was good to see the middle class coming and forming a partnership. It’s happened a few times in the last couple of games,” said Rohit.

INDIA READY TO SUPPORT GUYS WITH TALENT: ROHIT

India have a big problem as Suryakumar Yadav, who missed the current series through injury, was in fine form against the West Indies. India does not have Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant as the duo have been rested for the series.

“We have a lot of talent in this batting unit, we will keep giving them chances, it’s up to them to make the most of it. I thought Sanju showed how good he can play with this shot, it’s all about taking your chances .

“A lot of these guys are quite talented.

“They just need an opportunity to get out there and express themselves. There are also many boys waiting in the starting blocks, but their time will also come. We have to take care of the guys that have been in and around the team for a while.

“We know all these guys have a lot of talent. So it’s just a matter of giving the opportunity and the support from our side,” added Rohit.

“Was an important shot from Shreyas, couldn’t have asked for more from him, Jaddu handled the bat well,” he added.

India took an unbeatable 2-0 lead on Saturday after beating Sri Lanka by 7 wickets. The two teams meet in the final T20I at the same venue on Sunday and captain Rohit said the team will try to give chances to those on the bench.

“We’ll sit down tomorrow and see what we can do, we’ve fielded 27 players so far, there could be more. If you win the series, there are people who didn’t have the opportunities. Some of the guys will have them To play tests we have to take care of everyone. This is the sign of the times we are in,” he added.
