Defending champions Chelsea meet Real Madrid in the 2021-22 Champions League quarter-finals, while Manchester City have endured a showdown with Atletico Madrid. Elsewhere in the last eight, Liverpool meet Benfica and Bayern Munich need to beat Villarreal to keep dreams of continental glory alive.
All the teams still involved in the competition at this point are hoping to reach the final at the Stade de France on May 28th. Abramovich, a Russian billionaire with ties to Vladimir Putin, relinquished control of the club before having his assets frozen in Britain earlier this month in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
All three English clubs dodged in the draw, as did all three Spanish teams. In the semifinals, Manchester City or Atlético Madrid meet Chelsea or Real Madrid and Benfica or Liverpool meet Villarreal or Bayern Munich.
Villarreal is the only side still in the draw that has never reached the final. The Stade de France was a late replacement for the original host, St. Petersburg. UEFA has stripped the Russian Football Union of the right to host the final after invading Ukraine.
The draw for the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Champions League will take place in Nyon on Friday.
